Functional Separation or Functional Integration: Lessons from the Broadcast Mobile TV Markets in Finland and Italy (Vesa, 2009)
lataukset: 1006 | tyyppi: pdf | koko: 1 MB

Purpose of this study is to increase understanding of the role of industry structure and service architecture in the diffusion of complex systemic innovation such as broadcast mobile TV. The research is based on a cross-country analysis of the mobile TV market in Finland and Italy by using the Industry structure vs. lifecycle model and Mobile Market Matrix model as conceptual frameworks.

The findings indicate that an integrated approach appears to be more successful when introducing complex systemic innovations such as broadcast mobile TV to the consumer market. These findings are in line with earlier research on the diffusion of mobile internet services. The central role of regulation in defining viable business models in a given market is discussed, and implications are drawn both for future research and business strategies.

RFID- ja EPC-teknologian leviäminen Suomessa: Mitä voimme oppia EAN-kokemuksista? (Tietohallinnon johtamisen käsikirja, 2/2007)
lataukset: 1888 | tyyppi: pdf | koko: 106 kB

Artikkelissa palataan EAN-koodin ja viivakooditeknologian leviämisen alkuvaiheisiin 1970-1980 -lukujen vaihteessa, jolloin Suomen kaupan keskusliikkeet ja elintarviketeollisuus veivät Suomen ensimmäisten 12 maan joukossa EAN-koodin maailmaan. Artikkelissa pohditaan, miten EAN-kokemuksia voitaisiin hyödyntää siirryttäessä sähköisen tuotekoodin EPC:n ja RFID-tunnisteiden käyttöön. EAN-kokemukset osoittavat, että EPC:n ja RFID:n kaltaisen järjestelmäinnovaation käyttöönotto on varsin haastava projekti suomalaisyrityksille. Diffusion of systemic Innovations such as EPC and RFID: Lessons from the roll-Out of EAN and barcode in the Finnish market (L.A. Mobility Roundtable, 2007)
lataukset: 1249 | tyyppi: pdf | koko: 178 kB

This paper analyses the diffusion of the European Article Numbering (EAN) product code, and the barcode technology in the Finnish market in order to create new understanding of potential routes in the diffusion of Electronic Product Code (EPC) and radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies is smaller markets. Based on the interviews of key actors of the Finnish EAN project, the paper highlights the similarities between the challenges of introducing a systemic innovations like EAN/barcode, and the emerging world of  EPC/RFID. The War of the Mobile and Internet Worlds: Regulations and Corporate Players (MORE, 2007)
lataukset: 597 | tyyppi: pdf | koko: 129 kB

With companies like Apple, Google and Nokia aggressively positioning themselves in the emerging mobile internet industry, the importance of understanding the structure and dynamics of various geographic markets is increasingly important. In this article, the Mobile Market Matrix is used as a tool in order to understand the characteristics of various market configurations. The role of telecom regulation in the evolution of the industry is discussed, and implications for the strategic planning and management in firms are drawn. Management Online Review (MORE), December 2007.

Orchestrated Business Networks as a Coordination Mechanism for Systemic Innovations (SBNi, 2006)
lataukset: 673 | tyyppi: pdf | koko: 274 kB

Based on the analysis of the Finnish and Japanese mobile services markets this article argues that the Internet-like, mix-and-match approach to the development of services by loosely coupled networks of companies is not necessarily optimal when dealing with systemic innovations such as mobile data services. In order to manage increasing technical and commercial complexity, special attention needs to paid to the governance mechanisms of extensive business networks. The optimal coordination mechanism is highly dependent on the innovation in question, and the industry life cycle stages. The Japanese “keiretsu” type, closely coordinated and orchestrated networks appears to be successful in the initial stages of evolution.

Evolving Role of Mobile Service Mediary: Is the I-mode Business Model Becoming Extinct? (Sprouts, 2006)
lataukset: 710 | tyyppi: pdf | koko: 387 kB

Technological evolution (e.g. the all-IP world) and changing regulatory environment (e.g. spectrum trading in the European Union) will change the mobile services industgry dramatically in the coming years. These changes will transform also the role of service mediaries, such as NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone, as their control over content providers and customers will be eroded by increasing use of Internet-type contant and an active role of large retailers and The Brands in becoming MVNOs in order to enhance their customer relationships.

Wireless Functional Environments: The Future of Wireless Service Delivery (Hong Kong Mobility Roundtable, 2005)
lataukset: 607 | tyyppi: pdf | koko: 249 kB

In this paper, professor Heikki Seppä and Jarkko Vesa introduce a new concept called Wireless Functional Environment (WFE). The paper argues that the evolution of electronics is laying the foundations of an invisible platform for electronic service delivery: Individuals will be living in an environment where they have access to hundreds of different functions and services that can be accessed and activated simply by pointing, touching or sweeping. Furthermore, three new service delivery paradigms called PointMe, TouchMe and SweepMe are introduced. (Seppä and Vesa, Hong Kong Mobility Roundtable, June 1-2, 2005)

Regulatory Framework and Industry Clockspeed: Lessons From the Finnish Mobile Services Industry (ITS, 2004)
lataukset: 830 | tyyppi: pdf | koko: 225 kB

This paper demonstrates how the regulatory framework in a given market affects the feasibility of various business models for mobile operators. Based on propositions derived from the literature of industry evolution, the concept of industry clockspeed and previous research on mobile services industry, this paper argues that the Finnish mobile market has lost its leading position partly due to the prevailing regulatory framework. The findings indicate that a regulatory framework, which is optimized for traditional voice services, is less than optimal as the industry transforms towards the data-centric world of mobile multi-media services. Furthermore, by slowing down the speed of change within an industry – i.e., by slowing down the industry clockspeed – regulatory framework may do a lot of harm, as critical time for developing new business models and innovation is lost for good, albeit consumers may get a change to enjoy extremely low prices at least temporarily until a shakeout within the industry eliminates some of the players in the market. Mitä Schumpeter sanoisi umts-kaupoista? (Bisnes.fi, lokakuu 2002)
lataukset: 1313 | tyyppi: pdf | koko: 494 kB

"Taantuman tultua rahahanat pysyvät visusti kiinni, yrittäjäriskin ottaminen ei juuri houkuttele ja turvahakuinen kustannustehokkuus on kovassa huudossa". Kuvaus sopisi hyvin kevään 2009 taloustunnelmiin, mutta itse asiassa lainaus on Bisnes.fi-lehdessä lokakuussa 2002 olleesta kolumnista "Mitä Schumpeter sanoisi umts-kaupoista?". Vuonna 2002 elettiin internet-kuplan jälkimainingeissa ja teleoperaattorit olivat upottaneet käsittämättömät summat rahaa umts-lisensseihin. Yhtäkkiä riskirahan saanti, joka on on talousguru Joseph Schumpeterin teorioissa kolmas kriittinen tekijä uusien innovaatioiden ja rohkeiden yrittäjienrinnalla, tuli huomattavan vaikeaksi. Parhaillaan käynnissä olevan globaali talouslama on korostanut toimivien (riski)rahoitusmarkkinoiden kriittisyyden koko talouskasvulle. Mitähän Schumpeter sanoisi nykyisesti taloustilanteesta? (Bisnes.fi, lokakuu 2002)
